Sooperman

I saw THE IRON GIANT several times at the theater when it was first released, and loved it immediately. To my mind, Brad Bird is a genius… What he did stepping in to fix RATATOUILLE was nothing short of staggering. His TOMORROWLAND was a rare misstep, and I have a theory about who hobbled that film (and it wasn’t Brad!), but I want to keep things positive, so… let’s move on.

There are few perfect films, and this one is also not perfect. But wow, neither is PINOCCHIO (my all time favorite animated feature, and one of my favorite features of all time), and in my humble opinion, that’s how close this film gets. The movie is stuffed with wonder, heart, whimsy, exhilaration, wry humor, and heartbreaking sacrifice. You want your kid to grow up to be a good human? Watch THE IRON GIANT and use it to teach him or her about the best stuff in life.

Maybe the best thing about the movie is, everyone WANTS a sequel, but knowing how that usually goes, the people who love the original probably hope a sequel will never be made.

Then again, Spielberg made that commercial a few years ago where E.T. visits a grown Elliot, and man, did that bring all the feels. So - who knows. There might be another adventure for Hogarth and Sooperman.

I still don’t have a large action figure of the Giant, but …hopefully someday.

Can’t even think about this film without choking up.

Brad, you done good.
